Steam Train at Tawanui

DescriptionSteam train on the Catlins Branch Line at Tawanui.

I am unsure exactly when this photograph was taken. It is possibly the last train for locals prior to the closure in 1971. The photographer, Don Jenks, was onboard this train. However, it broke down at Tawanui, and it is possible Don got off while waiting for the rescue train to snap this photograph.

Prior to the closure of the Catlins Branch Line in 1971, NZR put on the special steam passenger train to give locals on last ride between Tahakopa and Owaka.
