Father O'Leary Funeral St Patrick's Church

DescriptionThis photograph depicts Father O'Leary's funeral at St Patrick's Church, Lawrence in 1916.

At the time of his death, aged 69, Fr O'Leary had been the priest at Lawrence for 35-years. Born at Macroom, County Cork, Ireland, O'Leary attended the Diocesan College at Fermony. He arrived in New Zealand in 1874, where he was first engaged in Dunedin. He later served at Oamaru and Invercargill, before being appointed to Cromwell in 1880. In 1882, he transferred to Lawrence. In 1889, he was appointed Dean of Central Otago.

O'Leary was remembered as a linguist, historian, and an enthusiastic Gaelic scholar. His obituary noted him as a person with "broad human sympathies," and described him as the temporal and spiritual pastor of the Catholics of the Tuapeka County.
