HistoryAt the beginning of the 20th century South Otago farmers were transporting their stock to either Burnside or into Southland to be processed. By 1910 they had begun to discuss the possibility of establishing a local meat works. The preferred site was at Stirling; however, an agreement could not be reached with the railways and so a 22-acre site at Finegand was purchased. A committee formed to raise funds for and manage the build of the factory. This process took two years and on June 13, 1912 Clutha MP A.S. Malcolm officially opened the South Otago Freezing Company.
2012 marked the century of the works which is now operated by Silver Fern Farms. Finegand continues to be a primary employer in the district.
