HistoryTawanui, 53kms from Balclutha, was a significant sawmilling area with a railway station on the Catlins Branch line from 1913 to the 1930s. A post office operated from 1908 to 1968, and a small school educated local children from 1905 to 1962. Today Tawanui is a small farming area with a Department of Conservation camping ground.
