HistoryHouipapa was formed as a railway town. From 1909 until 1915 Houipapa was the railhead and the location of a railway construction camp. This township of roughly 600 had all the usual services. Of note, the refreshment room at the railway station was a favourite of Sir Truby King who owned the Lauriston sawmill at Tahakopa.
