HistoryTahatika is located up the Owaka Valley. Pioneer farmers began settling this area in 1870 prior to any roads existing. They carried anything they required on foot until a rough road was constructed in 1872. At its height in 1884, there were 50 farms settled between Tahatika and Purekireki. In 1880 a school was established to provide for the settler's children, with roughly 40 children in attendence in 1892. The school closed in 1941 with children required to travel to Owaka. In 1911, a coronation hall was built and this served the community until 1991. Many community groups used this hall including the Tahatika Women's Division of the Federated Farmers, the Tahatika Collie Club, the Tahatika Sports Club, the Tahatika Farmers Union, the Tahatika Badminton Club, and the Tahatika Tennis Club.
