HistoryPort Molyneux, 18kms south-east of Balclutha, was a port for coastal and river shipping. In the time prior to roads and railways, Port Molyneux was extremely important for transportation and trade in the Clutha District. In 1878, a massive flood resulted in a shift of the Clutha River mouth in effect leaving Port Molyneux as a backwater of silt, sand and dunes. It is now difficult to imagine this area as a port with hotels, stores, shops etc. The post office which had been established in 1868, despite the demise of the port, continued to operate until 1938. Port Molyneux School opened in 1865, and after the flood provided education for children of Kaka Point. Today this school has been transformed into a cafe.
