HistoryRomahapa, located 13kms from Balclutha and just up from Port Molyneux, was one of the earliest settlements in the Clutha District with Pakeha arriving as early as 1848. The earliest school in the district was established in Romahapa in 1858 and was known as the East Balclutha School. Students travelled from Puerua and Glenoamaru to attend this new school. From 1883 to 1901 the school was known as Puerua School and in 1902 was renamed the Romahapa School. Romahapa School remains a popular primary school in the district. At one time, Romahapa boosted a general store, hotel, hall, post office, flourmill, sawmill, bakery, blacksmith, and a binding and twine factory. The settlement also had a church which was constructed in 1856. The railway station was very important to the area providing the import and export of goods into the community, including Kaka Point, and also transported passengers. Today Romahapa is a quiet township with a school, hall and cemetery.
