DescriptionJames 'Maunsil' Blackmore immigrated to from Australia to New Zealand in 1861. Originally from County Kilkenny Ireland, Maunsil travelled with his brother Henry and father John.
On 14 March 1883, he married Mary Jane Wilson of Weatherstones. Despite, Mary having left Mausil in August 1885 due to ill treatment, the couple had five children together between 1883 and 1890.
In the 1880s, Maunsil established the Princes of Wales Temperance Hotel. As a temperance hotel, the establishment sold no alcohol, and as such the business struggled. In 1913, Maunsil was charged with sly grogging.
Maunsil died in Dunedin on 24 June 1924 and was buried in the Waipori Cemetery.
