DescriptionAlf, originally from Heligoland an island off the German coast, immigrated to New Zealand about 1866 after having spent many years at sea.
Alf first settled in the Wakatipu area and explored deep into the Fiord. In September 1881, he was living in Macetown prior to starting dredge work. He later worked in quartz mines in West Australia before working as master of a dredge on the Clutha River.
He moved to Waipori where he became the working manager of the 'Jutland Flat' dredge and stayed in the district for around 10 years.
Alf died at the age of 72 on 22 January 1912 at Hokitika.
