Waipori goldminer John Houlihan married widow Mary Riordan on 23 September 1888 at Lawrence. At the time, Mary had seven children aged between 12 and 3 years. The couple had a further five children between 1889 and 1894, however the eldest Houlihan child drowned in the Waipori River in December 1890 aged 18-months.
In 1890, John Houlihan purchased the Waipori Hotel. He operated the business for 10-years before purchasing the Evans Flat Hotel in 1900. John operated this hotel until his death in November 1906, aged 71.
