DescriptionThis photograph shows John and Mary Houlihan with some of their children outside their Waipori Hotel.

Waipori goldminer John Houlihan married widow Mary Riordan on 23 September 1888 at Lawrence. At the time, Mary had seven children aged between 12 and 3 years. The couple had a further five children between 1889 and 1894, however the eldest Houlihan child drowned in the Waipori River in December 1890 aged 18-months.

In 1890, John Houlihan purchased the Waipori Hotel. He operated the business for 10-years before purchasing the Evans Flat Hotel in 1900. John operated this hotel until his death in November 1906, aged 71.

Mary Houlihan died in July 1920 aged 63, while visiting her son William Riordan in Melbourne. She is buried in the Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne. PhotographerUnknown Date1890-1900RightsThis item is out of copyright. ContributorWaipori Goldfields Charitable Trust
