DescriptionGeorge Guise, labourer, arrived in Port Chalmers on 13 July, 1874 from London.
Also on board were his parents, John and Sarah, and brother Francis (Frank).
The family lived at Wild Bush, Wallace District, Southland between 1882 and 1887. George's brothers, Henry and Hudson, had settled at nearby Stevens Bush from about 1870.
George married Albina Butler in 1884. They had six children born in New Zealand between August 1884 and November 1891.
The family settled in Waipori in early 1893. George worked as a winchman on the Waipori dredge. A reference written by Lorenzo Resta of the Upper Waipori dredge stated that George had been in his employ for three years and was 'punctual, steady, sober and trustworthy.'
From Waipori the Guise family shifted to Jumbunna, Victoria.
At some stage George also worked on a dredge for an Argentinian Company in Chile.
