DescriptionJohn Burke Crowley was born at Waipori in December 1874, the third child of Michael and Julia Crowley.
John left school to work on the Waipori gold dredge. After he gained experience on the No.1 dredge, he progressed to be the driver and winchman on the No.2 dredge.

On 30 March 1921, John married Edith Isabel McCluskey at Lawrence. They settled in a stone house where the road from Waipori comes onto the flat approaching Lawrence.
