DescriptionMichael Carmody arrived from Scotland in 1879. He took up residence at Waitahuna where he became a miner.
In 1887 Michael's mother Catherine immigrated to New Zealand to join her son. She died three years later in 1890 and is buried in the Waitahuna Cemetery.

At the turn of the century, Michael spent a lot of time in Waipori and can be seen in community photographs from this time. Although, there is no evidence of him mining there.
