DescriptionEdward Crabbe, known as Ted, was born in New Zealand about 1881. He lived in a hut high in the Lammerlaw Ranges near Devil's Creek and next to Anderson's Gully.
This photograph shows that Ted kept a cow for milk, and the tall pole was likely used for hanging meat.
One story tells of a heavy snowfall in the area in which a party went out to see if he was alright. Upon arrival at the hut, they discovered Ted had climbed out of his hut onto the snow through the thatched roof.
During the First World War, Ted served as a rifleman in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade 1st Battalion A Company (WWI 23/106).
Ted worked on the Waipori Power Scheme into the 1930s. In March 1938 he was killed working at the Waipori Powerhouse when he fell 15 feet from scaffolding onto the rocks below. He was engaged in shifting a large pipe, and it appeared that the pipe shifted suddenly, causing Ted to slip and fall.
Ted died 30mins after the fall. He was aged 57. He is buried in the Anderson Bay Cemetery.
