DescriptionGeorge Linklater was born in Kirkwall, Orkney on 10 April 1862. By July 1897 he had made his way to New Zealand and was goldmining at Waipori.
George is recorded as living in Waitahuna in 1898, where he successfully breed and showed horses. George also undertook this pastime while at Waipori.
In 1905 George married Isabella Margaret Cartwright of Waipori. George was recorded as a dredge owner at the time.
Shortly after, in February 1906, George travelled inland to Kelso where he was employed to supervise the new Happy Valley dredge that was re-erected near Kelso to work at Elliot's bend.
In 1909 George purchased a farm at Murray's Flat, Waitahuna. In 1911 his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Cartwright, left Waipori after 40-years to move in with the Linklaters at Waitahuna.
George died in 1946 aged 84. He is buried with Isabella, who died in 1953 aged 71, in the Waitahuna Cemetery.
