DescriptionElizabeth Atkinson was born in Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland in 1847. Elizabeth came to New Zealand with her father Richard and sister Margaret on board the Columbus in 1864.
Elizabeth's father, Richard Atkinson, was murdered at her brother-in-law's Waipori Hotel in December 1865.
In 1870 Elizabeth married John Lomas, storekeeper and goldminer of Waipori, at St Paul's Church, Dunedin. John gave Elizabeth a side saddle as a wedding gift.
John and Elizabeth had eight children, however four of them died as infants.
Elizabeth Lomas died, aged 55, at her Waipori residence on 21 June 1902. The cause of death was a diabetic coma which had last two days. She is buried with John, who died in 1910, and their four infant children at the Waipori Cemetery.
