DescriptionEsther Maclean was born in Swansea, Wales in 1846. In 1870, she married Scotsman Alexander Ross at Dunedin. The couple lived at Waipori. They had six children between 1871 and 1881.
In February 1883, their eldest son David died after a "long and lingering illness" aged 12-years. Alexander, suffering from throat cancer, died about 6-weeks afterward.
A widow at 37, with five children, Esther quickly remarried to Allan Maclean, 27 years her senior.
In 1894, Alexander and Esther's eldest daughter, Esther, died at the home of her stepfather's, aged 19. She was recorded as a dressmaker of Waipori.
