DescriptionBorn in 1876, John 'Jack' Hynes was the eldest child of Patrick and Elizabeth Hynes of Waipori.
He attended school at Waipori until 1889 when he left to go sledging timber for 15s a week. The following year Jack's father died. Despite Jack's wage, with eight siblings and his mother to support, the family struggled.
In 1896, Jack married Annie Tobin. The couple had two children together.
In 1904, Jack immigrated to Victoria, Australia. It appears Annie did not go with him. In 1911, he married a second time to Mary Maud Alice Theresa Blair at the Catholic Church in Osborns, Australia. They had two children together.
