DescriptionCatherine was born in 1869 to Elizabeth and and Alexander Cameron.
While teaching at Hokitika, Catherine met and married John Thomas (JT) Johnson Junior. The couple had three children; George Cameron 1899, Jack Whitby 1907, and Roland Oswald 1925.
The family lived at Waipori from about 1902. Catherine is said to have taught music and painting in a room near Knight's Store.
JT Johnson's obituary states he was the last miners working the Waipori goldfields, hampered by the deepening waters of Lake Mahinerangi and illness.
Catherine died in July 1948 aged 79. JT followed less than a year later in March 1949 aged 80.
This information comes from pages 160-161 of 'Gold Beneath Dark Waters | The People of Waipori,' by David Still. You can read more about JT's fairly extensive mining businesses on these pages.
