DescriptionAnn Porter was one of four children born to miner Mick Porter and Mary Dynan, in Galway, Ireland. She married shearer Thomas Raynes in Melbourne, Australia on 27 December 1855. They settled at Castlemaine, Victoria and had four children; Mary Ann born 1856, George 1857, Thomas 1860, and Elizabeth Frances in late 1860. Baby Thomas died as an infant and her husband Thomas drowned in October 1860 while trying to cross a flooded river.
Sometime after these events, Ann and her three surviving children emigrated to New Zealand, first settling at Lawrence before moving to Waipori.
In May 1868 Ann married Waipori carpenter Fitz Edward Anderson.
In 1874, Ann, Fitz and Ann's children moved to Kaitangata. Fitz again set up business as a carpenter.
Fitz Edward Anderson died in 1898 and is buried in the old Kaitangata Cemetery. After his death, Ann lived at Gore near her daughter Elizabeth. Ann, aged 86, died on 17 November 1913. She is buried in the Gore Cemetery.
