HistoryFinegand, 3 kms south of Balclutha, was once a large farming estate named by pioneer John Shaw in 1852 in memory of his home in the highlands of Scotland. In 1912 a major company, the South Otago Freezing Co Ltd (Primary Producers Co-op Society Ltd) was established beside the railway line which passed through Finegand. A small railway station was established in May 1912 for passenger and parcel traffic. The Finegand Freezing Works is today operated by Silver Fern Farms and is a significant employer in the Clutha District.
