Some have been identified as the sons of Sarah Ann Nicholson formerly Russell nee Hill. Sarah had five sons serve including John Nicholson, Frank Russell, Ernie Nicholson, Charlie Nicholson, George Russell.

As all brothers embarked in different years, the photograph was likely taken in 1919 when all had returned.
