HistoryKakapuka is a farming area located 3kms south-west of Balclutha. The area was once named Waitapeka, however the name was changed quite early on in the history of the settlement. At one time, Kakapuka was the railhead of the mainline for all areas further south. The school opened in 1886 and operated until 1946. Today Kakapuka consists of a smattering of residental properties and a sawmill.
