HistoryThe Kuriwao Gorge begins about 6kms from Clinton. The area was originally part of the Popotunoa Run, however became a separate title in 1861 and was later opened up for settlement in 1876. Farmers in the area carted their milk to the Wairuna factory. The Kuriwao Gorge School opened in 1895 with 13 pupils in attendence and closed about 1940. In the 1990s a recorded 39 farms were operating in the Gorge. Today, the area continues to be a farming district.
