HistoryWairuna is an agricultural district located 40kms from Balclutha. Originally part of the Poptunoa Estate, subvision and settlement began in 1863. The area received a lot of highland Scot immigrants between 1864 and 1870 and thus gained the nickname 'Little Aberdeen'. A Presbyterian church was built in 1868 to provide services for the community. In the early days children attended school at Popotunoa, however in 1877 the Wairuna School opened. This school closed in 1944. A post office also operated for a short time between in 1911 and 1915.
