HistoryThe Waikoikoi area sits along the Waikoikoi Stream between Tapanui and Gore. Runholders worked the land from the 1850s, and these were split for settlement in 1877 paving the way for more settlers. These new farmers grew crops such as wheat and oats with threshing mills hauled from farm to farm. After the opening of the Waipahi-Tapanui Railway line large quanities of grains were exported from the region. A school was built in 1880, and a Presbyterian church was built in 1889. A post office operated from 1883 to 1937 when rural mail began operating out of Gore. A hall was established in 1893 and this provided a facility for many organisations such as the Women's Division of the Federated Farmers, Young Farmers' Club, and the Country Girls' Club. The Waikoikoi Cricket Club formed in 1893 and celebrated their centenary in March 1994. Today the township consists of the school, hall, and a war memorial.
