HistoryCaptain Francis Wallace McKenzie took up Glenkenich Station near Tapanui in 1858. As early as 1868 the Glenkenich Hundred opened for sale increasing the settlers in the area. Glenkenich School opened in 1877 and provided education for local children until 1948 when it was consolidated with Kelso. Today the Glenkenich area remains a small farming community with Tapanui as its service centre.
