HistoryHeriot is located 14kms south-west of Raes Junction. First known as Swift Creek, by 1879 the settlement had a hotel and a school. In the 1880s the area became a busy farming community with the planting of crops such as wheat and oats. Today the area largely consists of mixed dairy and sheep and beef farms. Surveyors had bestowed the name Heriot on the township, however this wasn't recognised locally until the arrival of the railway and post office in 1884. The railway established the township as the heart of the community attracting commercial buildings, a boarding house, saleyards, a rugby club, and a Caledonia Society. The railway line which connected Kelso to Edievale was removed in 1978 after extensive flooding damaged the line. Today the township of Heriot contains a primary school, hotel, rugby club, community centre, a farming supplies store, contracting business, veterinarian, and a convenience store.
