HistoryMount Stuart is a small farming area to the east of the Waitahuna River 25kms north-west of Milton. The area was originally part of Roxburgh Station which was farmed by Walter Miller and his family for whom Miller's Flat is named. In 1857 Thomas Murray established a farm and built a house. Later, the Mount Stuart Railway Station was built near this home. The railway station operated as a central point for those farming in the area. The Mount Stuart School opened in 1882 and was closed in 1942 two years before the closure of the post office.
