HistoryHillend is 17kms from Balcutha on the rise between the Clutha River and Lovells Flat. Hillend originally referred to the run held by the Maitland brothers in the 1860s. This was subsequently split into smaller settler blocks. A school was established at Hillend as early as 1868. A second school was built in 1875 and named North Hillend. This school closed in 1889. In 1941 Hillend School consolidated with Balclutha. Today Hillend is predominately a farming community.
