By: Tiffany Jenks1st Nov 2021 9:30AMMy Grandfather was a Mclennan from the Highlands of Scotland I was fascinated to read about this place. My mother moved to Newzealand her father was a Mclennan. Her name was Violet Elizabeth Mclennan she married Grahame Wardlaw she had a son and a daughter with him. Her daughter is Sharon Castle, married To Tim Castle, Lawyer.

Maclennan

Main

HistoryMaclennan was established as a railway town to support the sawmilling industry in the central Catlins. From 1915 until its closure on 27 February 1971, the Catlins River Branch railway passed through the village. Originally the station was larger, with a goods shed, turntable, watertower etc. At the end of WWI much of this infrastructure was shifted up the line to Tahakopa and a smaller station building was constructed. The Maclennan railway serviced a large area included Kahuika, Papatowai, Tautuku, and Chaslands. Today Maclennan is a small farming town with many of the original buildings remain including the railway station, railway houses, boarding house, shop, school, and town hall.
