HistoryTaieri Mouth is a fishing and farming community, and a popular holiday spot. During the goldrush, transportation of goods from Dunedin via the Taieri River was essential and a signal station was built to help guide vessels over the Taieri bar. Later, during the construction of the railway from Dunedin to Balclutha, material was shipped up the river to Taieri Ferry. Despite its importance to early trading, Taieri Mouth remained isolated until the improvements in roads and infrastructure. A bridge was built over the Mouth in 1912, however the road was not sealed until the 1960s. Today Taieri Mouth is a popular recreation destination with many owning cribs in the settlement.
