HistoryLocated 5kms from Lawrence, Gabriel's Gully is noted as the location at which Gabriel Read discovered gold in 1861. This discovery sparked the Otago goldrush. Two months after the discovery, the Tuapeka area had a population of 11,000. In 1861, this was twice the population size of Dunedin. The area was once buried by goldmining tailings, however today has a monument commemorating the site as the beginning of the New Zealand goldrush.
