HistoryInch Clutha is an island on the Clutha River 5kms south-east of Balclutha. The river was once the main transport link in the district which made the island an important location with punts from Stirling, Kaitangata and Paratai all connecting at Inch Clutha. Overtime the island has had a hotel, cheese factory, two schools, post office, and both a Presbyterian and Anglican church. The schools were known as Inch Clutha School which operated from 1858-1878 and Matau School which operated from 1888 to 1929.
