HistoryWaiwera South is 20kms west of Balclutha. A hotel was built at Waiwera South in 1857 which became a link to the goldfields in the 1860s. During this time both the post office (1861-1988) and school (1869) were established. Later a railway station was also located here. The bustling community included a sawmill, flourmill, shops, agricultural contractors, poultry farmers, and carriers. In the 1930s a public works camp was based at Waiwera South, and from 1942 to 1946 a military camp was established to train WWII soldiers. Today the area continues as a small farming community.
