Lance-Corporal Robert Wood

DescriptionThis is a photograph of Lance-Corporal Robert Wood of Beaumont.

Born in Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, the son of David Wood, Robert immigrated to New Zealand in 1912 arriving on Christmas Day. Bob shifted to New Zealand following the death of his father, to help out on his late Uncle Robert Wood's property 'Dunkeld' at Beaumont. He spent three years working on the property prior to enlisting for World War One service.

Bob Wood died on 30th October 1917 due to wounds received in the Belle Vue engagement.

An article published in the Tuapeka Times on 17 November 1917 described Bob as having a "bright genial disposition" having made many friends during his time at Beaumont. He was "respected for his manly and straight forward character" having been a member of the Presbyterian Church Committee of Management and the Beaumont Horticultural Society.

Bob possessed a good tenor voice and was popular at all local functions. His obituary noted that "his willingness to assist in everything for the benefit of the district was a very pleasing feature in his character".
