HistorySituated 4kms from Owaka at the estuary of the Catlins River is Pounawa. In the early days Pounawea was an important location along the Catlins maritime network. In 1899 Allen Campbell established the Point House boarding house and post office. With good fishing, bush walks, and a scenic reserve, the area became popular with holiday goers and once boasted three boarding houses and two shops to cater for visitors. Today Pounawea continues to be a popular holiday destination with many houses in the area being used a cribs (holiday homes).
