Three Generations Celebrate 50-years of Cricket

DescriptionThis photograph shows three generations of Robertson cricketers. From left Jim, Russell, and Matthew. The photograph was taken in October 1998 when a West Otago invitation match took place in recognition of Russell's 50 consecutive years of playing cricket for Lawrence.

Russell Robertson played 52-years of cricket in the Lawrence area. He first began playing in 1948 for Tuapeka West in the South Tuapeka competition which comprise of two Lawrence teams, a Waitahuna team, a Beaumont team, and a Tuapeka West team.

In 1954 the South Tuapeka comp moved to the West Otago competition. The two Lawrence teams amalgamated, the Tuapeka West team recessed, and the Waitahuna team went to the South Otago comp. At this time there were 14 teams in the West Otago comp.

Russell got involved with the administration side of the game when he was still a teenager. At his first West Otago meeting he was elected vice-president, and the following year became president. On three different occasions he was president and served as secretary for 18-years.For a time he was also involved in selecting and as publicity officer.

In 1983 Russell was made a life member of West Otago cricket.

At the club level, Russell also served at various times as Lawrence captain, president, secretary, and convener of the prime lamb comp fundraiser.

During his time, Russell played in a team with his four sons, and a team with both his son and grandson. Cricket connected Russell socially to his wider community and he knew people everywhere - even being stopped by a former teammate in Edinburgh.

Russell retired from cricket in 2002 after 52-years of playing. Only two-years later, Russell passed away from a heart attach while playing indoor bowls. PhotographerNola RobertsonDate20 October 1998RightsNola Robertson is to be credited for this photograph.
